British Championships 2022
Jumpers took a team of 12 Gymnasts to Birmingham for the British Trampoline, Tumbling and DMT Championships. We had 2 taking part in DMT, 1 Tumbler, 2 Synchro pairs and 9 individual entries for Trampoline.
Within Tumbling, Jess Dawes was competing at her first British Championships and has worked solidly to get her exercises ready including a highly difficult 2nd exercise. Within the competition her first pass was good but had a light issue upon landing her double straight dismount. She held her nerve and managed to compete her 2nd pass and be one of only 2 girls in that group and 8 women in the entire competition to add a transition (a double in the middle of the exercise). Jess finished in 20th position with a score of 40.6
DMT saw Reece Buck and Rhys Gray fighting for Jumpers. Reece Buck has come back from a very recent injury and showed great work in the prelims to qualify for the semi-final in 4th place with a score of 51.6. Rhys Gray has had a long offload due to injury and was good to see him back doing what he does best. Rhys played it safe to ensure a sensible comeback and qualified for semi-final in 5th, Rhys had always planned to withdraw at this point to enable his ankles as little impact stress as possible. Reece Buck went on into the semi-final and pulled out his triple back dismount but unfortunately fell in the landing to finish in 9th place, first reserve for the final.
Synchro saw 2 pairs: Ella Bahamondes Tedham and then partner Savannah Wooten from Northampton in the Junior Section and then Louise Brownsey and partner Millie Harvey from Tolworth in the Senior Section. Ella and Savannah had a shaky prelims but squeezed into the final in 8th place. Within that final they managed to piece together a better routine and climb to 6th. Louise and Millie produced strong routines in the prelims to qualify to the final in 2nd position, at the final they showed an even better routine scoring 46+ to hold 2nd and put real pressure on the winners, who happened to be current European Synchro Champions.
Individual Trampoline saw Jumpers gymnasts in all 6 sections: Youth Male and Female, Junior Male and Female and Senior Male and Female.
Sophie Yates was representing in the Youth Section in her first ever British Championships and had a great first routine beating her best time of flight score. Within the 2nd routine she sadly came out of skill 10 a bit short and out bounced to the end deck to incur landing deductions. Sophie still finished in 15th, even with deductions taking off.
Joseph Watson was also in the Youth section, also in his first British Championships and after a solid prelims he had qualified for the final in 5th position, this included a 10 HD for his 2nd routine, which is a great achievement. Within the final Joseph scored well again but dropped slightly and finished in 7th position.
Jayden Boreham was in the junior section of his first British and unfortunately had a bit of a bad day at the office. He has worked very hard in the lead up and showed beautiful routines but sometimes it just doesn’t work out on the day. He held his head up high and I’m sure will be back again.
Kian Terry was also in the junior section and again competing at his first British. He fought very hard to ensure he finished his 2nd routine under pressure and in doing this qualified a spot in the finals finishing in 8th. Within that final, he made a change but a sensible one showing good awareness to climb up to 4th with a score of 49.820
Holly Keeping was in the Junior Section and after a slightly nervy first routine had to recompose and hold her nerve to be able to compete her new Difficulty in routine two. She did this and can now say she has competed a 9DD. Holly finished in 19th position.
Ella Bahamondes Tedham was also in the Junior Section competing at her first British and after a lovely first routine with a 14 Time of Flight, she sadly mistimed skill 4 in routine 2 and landed on the end deck. Ella finished in 24th position, but I’m sure this will not damper her spirits and will be back showing her best again soon.
Josh Constable was in the Seniors and again in his first British and did well to control his nerves. The Seniors is full of GB internationals competing big routines and Josh did himself proud competing his 13.2DD for the first time and showing his potential, Josh finished in 18th position.
Peter Buravytskiy was also in the Seniors and showed his elegance with his work and pieced together a wonderful 57+ routine to easily qualify to the finals in 3rd position. Within that final, Peter produced again under pressure to climb to 2nd position in a Senior Men’s Final. Peter also won the Paul Luxon trophy on the Saturday with the highest execution on an exercise! Peter achieved an execution of 17.2 on a 14.6 DD routine!
Louise Brownsey was in the Seniors and after a mistake in routine one, quickly adjusted to a great mind-set to get that 2nd routine done and qualify for the final in 3rd position. Within the final, Louise showed a much better routine with beautiful lines to finish in 2nd position only 0.7 away from the British Champion.
Mark Baker judged for us all weekend, bar the last flight, giving him enough time to join Peter for his final performance.
James Coomber, Ollie Reis, Ashley Reed and James Ferrari made up the coaching team and worked tirelessly to keep our team sane, focused and enjoying themselves.
Big thank you to the centre staff who stayed and looked after the centre while the coaches were away!
Thank you to British Gymnastics for a brilliant event.
Great work from team Jumpers and roll on the next competition!
